Advocates in Aviation – 2nd Annual Art Contest
Calhoun County Airport (KPKV) is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Calhoun Air Center Art Contest winners. The winners and family gathered at Calhoun County Airport on Saturday, November 13th for the local Art Contest’s Awards Ceremony which began with lunch, drinks and cake. Entries were judged by the Port Lavaca Art Guild and were categorized into three age groups: first, second, third place and two honorable mentions.
“We strive to be advocates in aviation via art. Calhoun County has some very talented artists.” stated Dianna Stanger, Calhoun County airport manager. “The children embraced this year’s theme; 50 Years of Human Space Flight. Calhoun Air Center received a total of 352 art entries, more than double from last year!”
The fifteen winners were awarded art classes, art kits, autographed aviation books and a travel bag with more prizes specific to aviation – all made possible by this year’s sponsors. Although the 19 mph winds did not allow the pilots to take the winners on discovery flights, each received a certificate so they may return at a later date and see the world from a new perspective. The airport’s local art contest is structured around The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) International Aviation Art Contest.
All of the 2010 entries will be submitted to the 2012 Texas Kid’s Aviation Art Calendar Contest which is designed to motivate and encourage children to study aeronautics, engineering and science. Each child will receive a participation certificate from TxDOT Aviation Division in spring 2011. Winners compete at a state, national and international level.
Calhoun Air Center manager, Steve Plunkett said, “With the community’s help Calhoun Air Center hopes to inspire these children to soar new heights! Our goal is to have more children from Calhoun County featured in the 2012 calendar.”
The winners of the 2012 TxDOT International Aviation Art Contest will be announced by February 2011; winning contestants along with their family and teacher will be invited to the Texas Aviation Conference Banquet which will be held on May 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin, Texas.
